Jean L. Van Hoose, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2025, at the age of 98.
Born and raised in Port Clinton, Ohio, Jean was the cherished daughter of Edwin and Cora (Geiger) Schmitt. She met the love of her life, Richard Van Hoose, and they married on November 18, 1950. Together, they shared over five decades of joy. They especially enjoyed dancing the Jitterbug, which they performed with flair.
Jean was a great cook whose goulash was a favorite of her son, Mark. She found joy in preparing the holiday meals. A devoted sports fan, Jean cheered passionately for Cleveland’s Cavaliers, Browns, and Guardians—though she also rooted for the team “up North,” much to her family’s chagrin.
Her love for dogs was lifelong and deep. Over the years, many furry companions were part of her family. In later years, she looked forward to visits from Mark’s dog, cherishing the comfort and companionship they brought.
Jean is survived by her son Mark (Mary Beth); grandchildren Eric (Neha) and Brian (Amee); and great-grandchildren Iris, Camille, Xavier, Donovan, and Natalie. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Richard, and brother Lowell.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to those who cared for Jean with kindness and compassion, including Laurie Thomas, Kyle Auxter, Monica Monak, Dot Sutherland, and the many other wonderful caregivers who enriched her life.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Jean’s name to the Humane Society, Otterbein Marblehead SeniorLife Community, or St. John’s Lutheran Church in Port Clinton, Ohio.
