Jean Ann Smalley passed away Friday, March 17, 2017, at Mercy-St. Charles Hospital. Jean and her twin sister, Jo Ann, were born June 10, 1941, at the Millbury farm home of her parents William and Laura (Miller) Taylor. Jean enjoyed her elementary school years at Allen Central School and graduated from Genoa High in 1959. On April 2, 1960, she married Leonard E. Smalley at First St. Johns Lutheran Church, Oregon, Ohio. Proud of her Pilgrim ancestor, Myles Standish, Jean was very active in the Toledo Colony of the Society of Mayflower Descendants since 1982. For thirty-four years, Jean had also been active in the Daughters of the American Revolution. Jean and Leonard have enjoyed years of membership in the Cooley Canal Yacht Club since 1976. She supported Leonard in all his projects for the club, and she herself was president of their ladies auxiliary in 1982, 2001, and 2003. Jean was also president in 2008 and 2009 of the local chapter of International Satin Gavel, the organization of past presidents of boat and yacht club auxiliaries. She and Leonard made many friends and enjoyed their fellowship while residents in the Genoa Elderlife apartments. Jean was a lifetime member of Genoas St. Johns UCC, having been confirmed there in 1955. Jean is survived by her husband of 57 years, Leonard, children, Jeffrey Smalley (Lois Kersten) of Martin, Jacqueline Gacsal (Frank) of Maumee and Lori Pietrowski (Joe) of Elmore. Surviving are her grandchildren: Sarah Smalley, Andrew Tibbs (Ayla), Sean Tibbs, Lindsay Schroeder (Ben), Amber Siefke (Jeff), Brittany Marko (Pete Lizcano), Ryan Marko (Marissa Laraby), and Logan Pietrowski; and step grandchildren, Laura Nowak (Dan) and Michael Kersten (Jessica). Her great grandchildren are: Alaya, Marcus, Liberty, and Brayden Schroeder and Max Marko-Lizcano; and step-great grandchildren, Alayna, Ava and Braden. Also surviving are her brother, John (June) Taylor of Toledo and sister-in-law, Sharon Horvath (George) of Genoa. Several nieces and nephews and their families also survive. Jean was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents and twin sister, Jo Ann. A funeral service for Jean will be conducted at 11 a.m., Friday, March 24, 2017, at St. Johns United Church of Christ, 1213 Washington St. Genoa. Interment will follow in the Clay Township Cemetery, Genoa. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m., Thursday, March 23, 2017, at the Robinson-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, 501 West St. Genoa, Ohio. The family suggests that memorials for Jean be directed to the Allen-Clay Joint Fire District, Station #36, 101 E. 6th St., Genoa, OH 43430; or St. Johns United Church of Christ, 1213 Washington St. Genoa, OH 43430.
