Jay was born in Columbus, Ohio, and grew up there and Vineland, New Jersey before returning to Toledo, Ohio. He attended Sylvania High School and graduated from The Ohio State University in 1978, where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. His professional career began in the Los Angeles area with Monroe Systems, but he soon joined Owens Illinois, working first for Lilly Paper Cup; and then, Libbey Glass, where he spent 30 successful years. A past motocross enthusiast, Jay in more recent years enjoyed golf, boating, and spending time with family and friends at their lake house in Michigan. He was a devoted father and husband, a diehard Ohio State Buckeyes fan, a sports car enthusiast, and animal lover, who cared not only for his dogs and cats, but the wildlife frequenting the many feeding stations at the family homes. Just prior to his death Jay and his wife were in the process of packing to leave their Toledo home of 22 years, to begin their retirement life with the major remodeling of their newly purchased winter home in the Wyndemere community of Naples, FL. Per Jay’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral service; rather, a small gathering of family and friends at the Achenbach family home. The family requests no flowers or contributions.
