Janice Watson, a beloved member of the Toledo community, passed away on June 2, 2024, at the age of 87. Her life was marked by dedication, compassion, and a zest for adventure.
Born in Monroe, MI, on June 28, 1936, Janice attended Monroe High School, where she graduated in 1954. She continued her education at Eastern Michigan University, earning her Master's degree and embarking on a lifelong journey of teaching and service.
Janice's impact on the lives of others was profound. As the Director of Counseling at Bedford High School, she guided countless students through their academic and personal challenges. Her passion for education extended into the classroom, as she also taught English and social studies, leaving an indelible mark on generations of young minds.
But Janice's story was not just about her professional achievements. It was a love story that spanned over seven decades. She met her husband, Charles, when they were both 12 years old. Their friendship blossomed into love and they married on August 9, 1958, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Petersburg, MI. Their union was a testament to commitment, enduring for 67 years.
The Watsons shared a home filled with warmth, laughter, and the aroma of delicious cooking. Janice loved experimenting with new recipes alongside Charles in the kitchen. Using the skill taught to her by her mother, Janice crocheted 300 afghans. Many were donated to charities in Africa and locally to the Cherry Street Mission.
Travel was another passion that defined Janice's life. She explored 70 countries across six continents, immersing herself in local cultures and histories. She soaked up the history of Europe and was awed by the majesty of wildlife in their natural habitat while on Safari.
Let us remember Janice as a woman who touched hearts, stitched together love, and left footprints across the globe.
She is survived by her husband, Charles; son, Gregory (Susan); grandchildren, Stacey, Brittany, and Rachel; great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Trent; siblings, Betty Hoffer and Eugene Haman; and many nieces and nephews. Janice was preceded in death by her parents; parents-in-law, Milo and Eva Mary Watson; sister-in-law, Mary Louise Haman; brother-in-law, William Hoffer; and niece, Jacki Hoffer Miller.
