James E. "Jim" Trent

December 17, 1942 — March 23, 2025

James E. “Jim” Trent, 82, of Port Clinton, Ohio, passed away Sunday, March 23, 2025, after a lingering illness. Jim was born in Coeburn, Virginia, on December 17, 1942, to Samuel Lee and Beryl Lee (Branch) Trent, and at the age of 18 he entered the United States Army and served proudly during the Vietnam War. Jim moved to Defiance, Ohio, and it was there that he met the true love of his life, Mary B. (Suman) whom he married in Gatlinburg, Tennessee on December 28, 1981. They celebrated 43 wonderful years together and grew closer every day. After his military service, Jim went to work for the General Motors plant in Defiance, Ohio, where he worked for over 32 years, retiring in 1995.

Jim was a thoroughly decent man whose hardworking and modest upbringing, in the hills of Virginia, shaped a man who was extraordinary to those who knew him well. No one was stronger and more of a fighter, while still remaining kind and loving.

Jim was a loving husband, father and grandfather whose whole life was centered around his wife and family. He enjoyed woodworking in his early years and cooking tasty foods like egg rolls and pies for his friends and family. He was one of the kindest people you would ever meet, never having a bad word to say about anyone. He and Mary were always together, no matter the destination. They loved the simple things like going out for lunch and enjoying the day together.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Mary, son James Lee (Dinni Burke) Trent, daughter, Tanya M. (Dave) Allegretti, and grandchildren, Anastasia, Ilyana, Sarah, Amya, and Drew. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother Samuel Lee (Mary) Trent, Jr.

Per Jim’s wishes, there are no services planned. Those wishing to honor him with a memorial contribution are asked to consider the Wounded Warrior Project or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. The Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory of Port Clinton, Ohio is assisting with arrangements. Online condolences may be offered at www.walkerfuneralhomes.com.
