On March 15, 2024, the Angels came and took James “Jim” Szteiter, our dear husband, father, and grandpa to Heaven to be with Jesus.
Born on February 21, 1951, Jim grew up in the North End of Toledo across the street from St. Hedwig Parish where he was baptized, attended grade school, made his first communion, was confirmed, and was married on October 30, 1976 to Sharon (Lewandowski) Szteiter. Jim furthered his Catholic education at Central Catholic High School where he graduated in 1969. He attended the University of Toledo Comm Tech College and received his associate's degree.
Jim served in the United States Army from January 1971 to December 1972 and was a 4th Engineer Advanced Individual Training Brigade Specialist. He served in Germany and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
Jim began his career at Willy’s Overland Jeep/Daimler Chrysler in June of 1973 where he worked for thirty years until his retirement in 2003. Jim was hired in as a factory worker and through the years worked his way up to supervisor and various management positions working as a Quality Control Engineer ending in PQI at the time of his retirement. Even with retirement, he couldn’t sit still, so he worked for the Great Lakes Credit Union and Continental Secret Service Bureau until he was asked to work at Toledo Mold and Dye and was contracted back with Jeep. He retired a second time in May of 2018.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents Stanley and Gertrude (Garwacki) Szteiter and his brother Ralph Sztieter.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving and devoted wife of 47 years, Sharon his three children Sandi (Eric) Christen, Andrew Szteiter-Jones, and Katy Johnson, and his six grandchildren, Grace, Abby, Will, Hunter, Brayden, and Amelia. They will all have fond memories of Dad and Gramps that will live in their hearts forever. Jim is also survived by his brother Joe (Diane) Szteiter and his sister, Mary Springer.
Jim enjoyed spending time outside, listening to the Beach Boys, playing cards, watching baseball, football, hockey, and basketball, sitting by the lake, playing golf, taking day trips, going fishing, taking drives, watching fireworks, and he took great pride in watering and taking care of his flowers. Jim was an avid Notre Dame fan, a Toledo fan because he wanted to be, and a Bowling Green fan by force. Although not documented, Jim was a proud honorary alumnus of the University of Notre Dame Class of 1974 all for a free hot dog and some beer. GO IRISH! He loved being with his family and enjoyed spending as much time with his children and grandchildren as possible. Jim was generous with his time and wisdom with his family and they will miss his loving advice, his ability to fix just about anything, and his constant support. Jim always made the most of every day and never took his days on this Earth for granted. Jim’s faith was so strong and he believed fully in the Lord. He prayed constantly and reverently, and he placed all of his trust in God. In true Jim fashion, we bet you ten cents that he’s up there in Heaven having the best time ever. Every day was a gift for Jim and he fully appreciated all of the blessings that God gave him.
