James P. Quinlivan

June 11, 1943 — February 23, 2013

On February 23, 2013 we lost our beloved husband, father, grandpa Jim, and dear friend, James P. Quinlivan, Sr. 69, of Maumee, Ohio. He was born in 1943, the proud son of an Irish immigrant father and German mother. A teacher in the Toledo-area public schools for 39 years, mostly at Whitmer High School where he taught history, Jim retired in 2004. He graduated from Libby High School and the University of Toledo, where, working his way through school, he earned undergraduate and graduate degrees and was a Jennings Scholar. Jim enjoyed playing golf and poker, books, was active in the Toledo Irish-American Club, a volunteer at the Jamie Farr Golf Classic and Stranahan Theater. He was a past member of Phoenix Masonic Lodge 123, and a longtime parishioner of Saint Joseph of Maumee Catholic Church where he faithfully served as an usher for many years. Jim loved dogs as well as talking about politics, history, and current events with anybody who would listen. He surely missed his calling as a contestant on Jeopardy. He was most proud of his children and their accomplishments, and his grandchildren. Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Kathy Zavotsky, sons, James P. Amy Quinlivan, Jr. of Mount Vernon, OH, Sean C. Quinlivan of Maumee, OH; grandchildren, Isabella Grace and Sutton Patrick. Preceding him in death were his parents, Michael and Eulalia, brothers, Thomas and Jack, sister, Rosemary Miller, and twin grandsons, Gage Patrick and Colin James. Friends and family may call at Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, 501 Conant St., Maumee on Tuesday, February 26, 2013 from 4-8 p.m. Funeral services will begin in the funeral home at 10:00 am Wednesday February 27, 2013, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Joseph Catholic Church, Maumee. Interment will follow at Saint Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed towards the Toledo Animal Shelter. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at St. Lukes Hospital ICU, Hospice of NW Ohio, and his doctors for their loving care. On line condolences may be made at walkerfuneralhomes.com
