James L. Phillips passed away peacefully in his home with loved ones Wednesday, October 19, 2011. He was born in Ashtabula, Ohio the 4th child of Irving and Martha Phillips. He came to Toledo in 1936 and working a short time at the Budd Lukes Restaurant and the Toledo Docks then joined the Canteen Service Company of Toledo in 1937. He started as a route man working himself up to retire in 1980 as Vice President of Sales at Canteen Service. He managed the Canteen Service Co of Middletown, Ohio for a period of about 2 years returning back to Toledo in 1949. Jim enlisted in the Army in 1942 and was discharged honorably in 1946 as a Staff Sergeant. He was a member of the Maumee Elks and enjoyed fishing, gardening and many years of bowling at Timbers, also enjoyed hunting in Pennsylvania, camping and golfing, but most of all his yearly golf outing with his 3 sons and a day of Christmas wrapping with his daughter. Jim was also seen riding his three wheel bike around the neighborhood. A loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, Jim will be terribly missed by all who knew him. He married Helen Edwards of Rossford, Ohio his one and only love in 1948 and they enjoyed 63 years together. They were blessed with 4 children, daughter, Deborah Ron Wilson; sons, Kenneth Barbara, James M. and Terrence Phillips. Also surviving 6 beautiful granddaughters, Lyndsi, Jamie, Tiffany, Nicole, Kimberly and Samantha; and 2 great grandchildren, Addison and Makayla. Jim is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Hazel Edwards of Maumee and Dorothy Tom Stock of Perrysburg and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his sister, Laura McKay; brothers Kenneth and Harold Phillips; half brother, Damon Paine and half sisters, Mildred Nejbauer and Julie Schmidt. The family would like to thank the nurses of Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their special care given to Jim in his last days. Family and friends may visit Friday, October 21, 2011 from 4-8 pm in the Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, 501 Conant Street, Maumee where funeral services will be held Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 10:00 am. Military committal services will follow in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio or the charity of the donors choice.
