James "Jim" W. Mason

November 5, 1936 — February 25, 2025

James “Jim” Wallace Mason, age 88, of Port Clinton, Ohio passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at Edgewood Manor Nursing Home, surrounded by members of his family. He was born November 5, 1936, in Fremont, Ohio, to Richard L. and Bonnie M. (Williams) Mason. He married the love of his life, Joan K. Fick, on November 28, 1959. She remains behind on earth, forever his sweetheart.

Jim’s pride and joy was his family. He is survived by not only his loving wife Joan Mason, of Port Clinton, but three daughters: Jody (Brian) Myerholtz of Columbus Grove, Jill (Bill) Schmidt of North Royalton, and Jennie (Daryl) Walters of Port Clinton; eight grandchildren: Wendy (Adam) Montgomery, Brian (Brittany) Myerholtz, Andy (Hannah) Schmidt, Nathan (Lesta) Walters, Eric (Mikaela) Schmidt, Emily (Mark) Hren, Katie (Ethan) Lauffer, and Evan Schmidt; and twelve great grandchildren: Evie Montgomery, Bennett Walters, Brenna Myerholtz, Amelia Walters, Sienna Lauffer, Elsie Hren, Claire Schmidt, Brayden Myerholtz, Owen Walters, Josie Hren, Lincoln Schmidt, and Chloe Schmidt, and one on the way, Attilee James Lauffer, who will carry his name. He is also survived by four siblings: Cynthia (Jerry) Bowman of Lebanon, Gary (Diana) Mason of Fostoria, Sheila Michael of Fremont,  Marda Mason of Sycamore; and sister-in-law, Kathy Mason, of Fostoria; plus many nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law George Fick; his mother-in-law Loretta Fick; his brother Lionel “Mouse” Mason; his brothers-in-law Bob Michael, Jim Fick, and Ken Fick; and sister-in-law Gwen Fick.

Jim graduated from Fremont Ross High School. He was a proud Veteran of the US Army. Jim was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, the Masonic Lodge, the Fraternal Order of Police, and Shriners. During his time with the Shriners he transported many children back and forth to and from Shriner’s Hospitals.

Jim worked as a Detective/Sergeant for the Port Clinton Police Department. He retired as the director of Sandusky County Juvenile Detention Center.

Jim loved spending time on Lake Erie whether that was fishing, boating, skiing, or swimming with his family and friends. One of Jim’s other favorite things to do was to help Santa Claus, which he did at an orphanage in Italy while serving in the army and then continued to do upon returning home, for a grand total of 50 joyful years.

Jim’s family and friends will remember his strength of character and his love for his family. Jim never met a stranger because to him, a stranger was just someone whose story he didn’t know yet. He was the heartbeat of his family and his absence is felt greatly. We will never be the same without him; we will never be the same because of him.
