James P. Hsu

James Peichung Hsu of Toledo, Ohio died April 13, 2013 at the age of 94 of natural causes. He was born on September 13, 1918 to parents Lvxiang and Dai Hsu in Jiangyin, China. In 1945 he received a scholarship to come to the United States to study and later became a US citizen. He received a bachelor’s of engineering degree at the National Central University, Nanking, master’s degrees from the Universities of Minnesota and Wisconsin and a PhD in chemical engineering from the University of Cincinnati. He was a professor at schools including the University of Dayton, Christian Brothers University, The University of Toledo, The Hong Kong Polytechnic Institute and a visiting professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As a practicing engineer he worked for IBM, General Electric, Owens Illinois and as a consultant. He was a skilled woodworker who enjoyed studying physics and math in his spare time, appreciating classical music or taking in nature. He was preceded in death by his first wife Irma (née Schmit) whom he married in 1957. He is survived by his second wife Judy (née Pagan) of 17 years, his three sons, Steven, Mark and Thomas, and eight beloved grandchildren, Claire, Andrew, Anna, Ezra, Ruby, Jeremy, Trevor, and Jessica and one great granddaughter Sylvia and a host of nieces and nephews. There will be a remembrance and memorial service on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at 3 pm at Steven's home in Ann Arbor. Arrangements by Neville Funeral Home, Reynolds Corners Chapel (419-535-0951).
