Jacqueline L. Opfer

December 4, 1928 — May 10, 2012

Jacqueline Opfer, Jackie O, age of 83 of Genoa, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 10, 2012, at Regency Hospital, Sylvania, surrounded by her loving family, after courageously fighting an extended illness. She was born on December 4, 1928, to Carl and Dorothy Young Helm in Latcha, Ohio, and grew up in Millbury, Ohio. Jackie graduated from Lake High School in 1946. She married Harold Dutch Opfer on June 14, 1947, in Elliston, Ohio. Together they started a business, Double O Auto Service; she spent many years as their bookkeeper. Over the next 17 years, they lovingly brought six children into the world. When auto parts were needed for the repair shop, Jackie would pile all six kids into the family Pontiac station wagon and head out to pick up the auto parts Dutch needed. She loved cooking, canning, and sewing for her family. When she finished raising their family, Jackie decided to enter the workforce. She worked for the Lucas County Welfare Department as a destructive clerk, retiring in 1992 on disability. Being a Mayflower descendant and the fourth great granddaughter of Revolutionary War hero, Morgan Young Jr., Jackie had a patriotic streak. She and Harold were active members in Ottawa County Democratic Club for many years, and she helped her husband in his elections as Benton Township trustee. In total, Jackie and Harold shared 50 years together. Even though Jackie had many debilitating conditions, she always had a love for life and rarely complained, unless you were preventing her from shopping. She was a long lifelong member of Trinity United Church of Christ. Jackie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Harold, and her treasured dog, Taschy. She is survived by her daughters, Jill Dennis Stinebaugh of Elmore, Joey Tammy Corisis of Toledo, and Geena Bill Belkofer of Graytown, sons, Danny Laessle Opfer of St. Cloud, Mark Gina Opfer of Pemberville, and Matthew Opfer of Genoa, as well as nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Also surviving are her devoted caregivers, Kay Cooper and Joanne Craft. A special thank you goes out to Tammy Tobian, R.N. and all the nurses and doctors at Regency Hospital for the wonderful care they provided to Jacqueline over the past three months. Visitation will be held at Robinson-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, 501 West St., Genoa, Ohio, on Monday, May 14, 2012, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at Trinity United Church of Christ, Elliston, Ohio, on Tuesday, May 15, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Lowell Peters officiating. Burial will follow in Elliston Cemetery. Memorials can be made to Trinity United Church of Christ, 17955 W. Third St., Graytown, OH 43432.
