Jack Spratt, Sr.

October 1, 1921 — April 9, 2018

Jack Spratt Sr. was born on October 1, 1921 and left this world on April 9, 2018. He was the third of seven sons born to Otis and Maude (Manuel) Spratt. As a B-17 ball turret gunner during World War II , he flew 39 missions over Germany with the 326th Bomb Squadron of the Eight Air Forces NinetySecond Bombardment Group based in Podington, England. On the 10th mission they were shot down and eventually rescued by General Patton and his Third Army in France. General Patton awarded each of the crew members a Bronze Star for their bravery. This was an unusual event as the Bronze Star is for infantry and not Army Air Corps personnel. Although the Air Corps tried to take it away they were not successful. He certainly was One Lucky Buckeye over Germany as the Ohio Historical Society called him in an article in their Timeline Magazine, dated April 2006. After the war, Jack married, raised a family, and worked for the Kuhlman Corporation for 35 years. Jack was preceded in death by his brothers; parents; and the love of his life, Jean Marie (Gertz), who passed in 2011 after 66 years of marriage. This proud American is survived by his cherished family, daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Ron Kornowa and son and daughter-in-law, Jack and JoAnn Spratt. He was the loving grandpa of Kelly and Mark Young, Kevin and Renee Kornowa, Jason and Rebecca Spratt and Jamie Spratt Oliver; 7 great-grandchildren adored him, Layne, Hasley and Wylen Young, Lindsey, Claire and Thomas Kornowa, and MacKenzie Spratt. There is no doubt that he will be missed. He also leaves behind many nieces and neohews; his childhood friend of 80 years, Lowell VanEtten; special neighbors, Barb and Don Schrader; and friends at Sunset Village, Vaughn, Don, Ray and John. Visitation will take place on Thursday, April 12, 2018 at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Avenue from 4 until 8 p.m. Services will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday in the funeral home. Interment with Military Honors by the Lambertville VFW Post 9656 will follow at Toledo Memorial Park. Donations may be made to St. Pauls Lutheran Church, 428 N. Erie St., Toledo, OH 43604, Barton Smith Lodge #613, Sunset Village or Ashanti Hospice. Many thanks go to Sunset Village, the staff of Barlow , and the angels of Ashanti Hospice for their love and care of Jack during the last months of his life.
