JACK W. SHAFFER Jack W. Shaffer, passed away suddenly on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at the age of 86. He was born on November 9, 1930 and was a resident of Perrysburg for over fifty years. He was a renowned local historian, lecturer, proud alumni member of The Ohio State University, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Jack earned his Bachelor’s Degree from The Ohio State University and then went on to receive his Master’s Degree from the University of Toledo; retiring as the Director of Health Sciences Library at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center. He was a proud veteran; serving his country in the Coast Guard and the Ohio National Guard. He was the past Commander of American Legion Post 28, and recently spoke at the Perrysburg Memorial Day Graveside Services on “Why Freedom is Not Free”. Jack was a member of Grace United Methodist Church for 49 years, where he also taught adult ministry classes. He was a frequent lecturer at Way Public Library, his most recent topic was “Churches in Perrysburg and Local Early Missionary Activity”. In addition to St. Vincent’s, Jack also worked in several factories, the old New York Central Railroad, and on boats in the Great Lakes. He had traveled extensively and had taken freighters across the Pacific to Asia, Australia, and through Europe and Greece. Jack was an avid reader, researcher, book collector, and perpetual student; as he once said, “I’m a believer in lifelong learning. We have a mind; let’s use it”. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Donna (Chrobarger) Shaffer. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Ruth M. (Wehde) Shaffer; children, Mark (Cathy) Muir, Tim Muir, Scott (Laurie) Muir, and Cris (John) White, all of Perrysburg. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Chase (Kimmy) Muir, Josh Muir, Nick White, Connor White; and two great grandchildren, Brooklynn and Josie. His unfailing devotion, gentle counsel, helping hand, and love will be greatly missed by those who knew him. Friends will be received on Wednesday, June 14, 2017 from 3:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at Witzler-Shank Funeral Home, 222 E. South Boundary Street, Perrysburg, Ohio (419-874-3133). A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, June 15, 2017 beginning at 1:00 P.M. at Grace United Methodist Church, 601 E. Boundary Street, Perrysburg, with burial following in Fort Meigs Union Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Perrysburg Christians United, 601 E. Boundary Street, Perrysburg.
