Irene E. Wolff

August 14, 1918 — May 26, 2016

Irene Elizabeth Wolff, 97, passed away on May 26 at Sunset House, Toledo, Ohio. She was born August 14, 1918, to Ernest C. and Margaret Alice (Flickinger) Reinhard in Crawford County, Ohio, the second of ten children. Irene was a graduate of Holmes-Liberty High School and Robinwood (now St. Luke’s) Hospital School of Nursing, where she met her husband of 48 years, Dr. Daniel S. Wolff, a resident at the hospital. Dr. Wolff practiced medicine in the Toledo area for over 40 years after his service in the U.S. Army during World War II. In addition to being a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother, as well as a tremendous cook who maintained an immaculate home, Irene was a faithful Christian and a tireless volunteer. She was a 60 year member of Hope Lutheran Church in Ottawa Hills, where she served on the church council and sang in the choir. She was a board member of Mobile Meals of Toledo for 20 years and served meals to area residents for 36 years. Irene was a long-standing member and past president of the Academy of Medicine Alliance of Toledo and Lucas County, and was also a member of the Ohio State Medical Association Alliance. Much of Irene’s volunteer time was spent at St. Luke’s Hospital. She was a life member and past president of the St. Luke’s Auxiliary, and managed the St. Luke’s gift shop for 20 years until she was in her late 80’s. Irene was also an emeritus member of the St. Luke’s Board of Trustees, and was awarded the 1991 Clair Martig Award for outstanding contribution to St. Luke’s Hospital and its community. Irene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Daniel, three sisters and three brothers. She is survived by her daughter, Marcia Thompson (Brian), sons, David Wolff (Betsy) and Richard Wolff (Cheryl); grandchildren, David Wolff (Katie), Allison Brunger (Eric), Gregory Wolff (Jess), John McLean Wolff, Eliza Bostian (Jay), and Eric Wolff; and great-grandchildren, Nolan Brunger, Sarah Kathryn Wolff, and Nathan Brunger. A fourth great-grandchild is expected in October. Also surviving are her sisters, Janet Shuck, Carol Rittenour and Kathryn Britton (Charles), her sister-in-law, Jean Reinhard, and her brother-in-law, Rod Rice, as well as many nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be welcomed on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Avenue (west of Corey Road) from 9:30 a.m. until the time of memorial services at 11:00 a.m. Irene’s family would like to thank the staffs of Sunset House and Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their care and kindness. Memorials may be sent to Hope Lutheran Church, Sunset Retirement Communities or Hospice of Northwest Ohio. “God made a promise to those who have faith, and you’ll be rewarded in great and glorious ways.”
