Howard G. Wittmer, Jr., age 89, passed away October 13, 2015 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Toledo. Howard was born March 2, 1926 in Chicago to Howard, Sr. and Evelyn Wittmer. An ensign in the US Navy during WWII, Howard attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Ohio Wesleyan. He received his B.S. in chemical engineering from The Ohio State University in 1949 where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. He remained an avid OSU fan and never missed a home game until about four years ago. Howard retired from Owens-Illinois after working in Pittman, New Jersey and later in the Closure Division in Toledo. He was a longtime member of the Toledo Ski Club and was known as World Wide Wittmer because he skied and played tennis throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. Howard loved to travel. He visited all but two states in the USA, traveled to Africa, China, Greece, Australia, and also took many cruises, experiencing every island in the Caribbean. Howard was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, David. He is survived by four nephews, one niece, and by his longtime companion and best friend, Sue Lovett. Visitation will be Friday, October 16, 2015 from 2-7:00 pm at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey Rd.) where funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:00 am.
