Howard Glen Ostling

Howard G. Ostling, 90, of Port Clinton, OH, passed away Saturday, May 31, 2008 at Riverview Healthcare Campus, Oak Harbor, OH. Howard was born on April 7, 1918 in South Euclid, OH to Karl Gottfrid and Anna Sofia Carlson Ostling. On June 22, 1946, he married Dorothy Berndt at St. John Lutheran Church, Port Clinton, OH. Howard was retired from civil service after 21 years and spent 16 years with Uniroyal. He was also a driver for the American Red Cross and delivered mobile meals. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, where he was a former Sunday school teacher and past church council member. Howard was an avid golfer and helped to form the Port Clinton Senior Golf League where he served as statistician. He was a veteran in the U.S. Army during World War II serving in the 833rd Aviation Engineer Battalion in England and the 877th Engineer Airborne Glider Battalion in France. Howard was a member of the V.F.W. Homer D. Gardner Post #2480 and the American Legion Post #113, both of Port Clinton. The famous Woody Hayes was Howards assistant basketball coach while attending New Philadelphia High School. Survivors include: Wife: Dorothy Ostling of Port Clinton; Daughter: Sharon Jim Snip Snider of Port Clinton; Grandson: Michael Mary Ann Snider of Port Clinton; Great Granddaughter: Haley Snider. Howard was also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his Parents, Brothers: Carl, Berger, Ragnar, Bengt; Sister: Judit Gotly. Visitation will be held from 2-8 P.M., June 2, 2008 in the Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home, Port Clinton, OH. Funeral Services will be conducted by Rev. James Lehman and Rev. Dan Keck at 10:30 A.M., June 3, 2008 at St. John Lutheran Church, Port Clinton. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, Port Clinton. Memorial contributions in memory of Howard may be made to St. John Lutheran Church Radio Fund or Stein Hospice of Sandusky, OH.
