Dr. Howard S. Madigan, age 94, passed away Saturday, November 7, 2015 at his residence in Kingston Independent and Assisted Living, Sylvania. He was born March 31, 1921 in Washington, D.C. to John and Alice Madigan. He was a 1942 graduate of Georgetown University and received his medical degree from Georgetown in 1945. After 2 years in the navy, he returned to Georgetown for graduate education in surgery. Board Certified, he was in private practice and on the faculty at Georgetown from 1952 to 1964. His strong interest in medical education led him to Toledo where he became the first Director of Medical Education at St. Vincent Hospital and Medical Center. In 1969, working with the Academy of Medicine of Toledo and Lucas County Dr. Madigan established the Northwest Ohio Institute for Continuing Education, which laid the foundation for continuing education in the 20 county area of northwest Ohio. With the opening of the Medical College of Ohio in 1970, he was appointed Associate Dean for Continuing Education, a position he held until his retirement in 1987. A lifelong interest in music, he sang in church choirs and with the Toledo Symphony Chorale from 1965 to 1999. A 40 year trustee with the Toledo Symphony, he served as Board President from 1970-1974. He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Mary. Surviving are 2 nephews, 2 nieces and many friends including long-time friend and recent caregiver Noi Suriyapa, her husband Dr. Chinda Suriyapa and their family. Their continuing devotion and care of Dr. Madigan was exceptional. Graveside services and burial took place in Troy, New York. A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 5, 2015 at 2 PM in St. Michaels in the Hills Episcopal Church, 4718 Brittany Rd, Toledo, OH 43615. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Dr. Madigans memory may be made to the Toledo Symphony, 1838 Parkwood Avenue, Suite 301 Toledo, Ohio 43604.
