Howard Lawrence Burkhardt, 88 of Maumee passed away at his home Monday September 7, 2015 surrounded by his family. Howard was born in Toledo August 16, 1927 to the late Laurence and Hildegarde (Roessle) Burkhardt. He married Donna Dustin on May 31, 1947. She preceded him in death on June 14, 1996. Together they had five children. As a boy he delivered newspapers and in 1944 was hired by The Toledo Blade as a copy runner. Howard retired as a Blade retail sales account executive in 1991 after 47 years of service. He was active in the Old Newsboys, Vice President of the Blade Federal Credit Union, President of the Blade Newspaper Guild, A Trustee of the Blade Employee’s Pension Fund and was involved with many other civic and charitable causes. He always looked at his clients as friends and remained in contact with them long after his retirement. He was always proud of The Blade and those who worked with him. He was a member of St Joseph Church in Maumee, Past President of the Holy Name Society, and a member of Tanglewood Golf Course. Through good and bad, The Buckeyes, Tigers and Lions were always his teams and everybody knew it. He remained active up until his heart attack on July 26, 2015 keeping in touch with other retirees, playing golf and having breakfast with the group at Bob Evans. He was preceded in death by his brother Gerald T. Burkhardt. Left to cherish his memory are those who were the pride of his life, his children; Lawrence H. Burkhardt (Rhonda) , Pamela M. Koontz (Mike), Timothy H. Burkhardt (Holly), Todd H. Burkhardt (Jacqueline) , Angela M. Taylor (Ian) , 12 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and longtime neighbor Clara Buckland. Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2015 from 11am-6pm at the Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, 501 Conant Street, Maumee, Ohio. Prayers will begin at the funeral home on Friday September 11, 2015 at 10am followed by the funeral Mass at 10:30am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Maumee, Ohio. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
