Hilton H. Murphy, age 91, passed away Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg, OH. Hilton was born April 14, 1917 to Hubert and Maude Murphy in Zanesville, OH. A 1936 graduate of Zanesville High School, Hilton received his bachelors degree from Muskingum College and masters degrees from West Virginia University and the University of Toledo. Hilton was the varsity football coach at DeVilbiss High School where he also held numerous teaching and administrative positions. He ended his career with Toledo Public Schools as the Commissioner of Athletics. He was a longtime member of Glenwood Lutheran Church. In 1969, then-Superintendent Frank Dick named him his administrative assistant for community and athletic affairs. Hilton put great ideas into action and launched one of this areas first Lights On Afterschool Programs, benefiting the districts children, working families, and the entire community. He supported the vision that children and youth deserve access to quality afterschool programs, and worked tirelessly as an afterschool ambassador to help keep kids safe, inspire children to learn, and help working families. In 2003, Hilton became a Toledo Public Schools Foundation Board member to help advance the mission of the Foundation to provide private funds to enhance teaching and learning opportunities for the districts children. The Hilton Murphy Teacher/Coach Scholarship Fund was established with the Toledo Public Schools Foundation to honor his passion for teaching and coaching and make a successful, life-changing impact on a young mans or womans future. Hilton was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia, who passed away in 1996. He is survived by his wife, Laura; son, Shawn Murphy; daughter, Megan Murphy; step-daughter, Karen Lay; 4 grandchildren and a great-grandson. Friends may visit the family at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. west of Corey Rd. on Thursday from 1-8:00 pm and Friday from 4-8:00 pm. Funeral services will be held Saturday 11:00 am at the Auditorium of the former DeVilbiss High School.
