He married Joan Reinagle of Pontiac, IL in 1950 and she preceded him in death after 63 great years together. Herb grew up in Toledo and graduated from Devilbiss High School in 1946, and from The Ohio State University in 1950. During his first year at OSU he proposed and convinced the university administration to add a Hospitality Food Service Mgt. curriculum to its vast list of studies, and was the first student to graduate with a Bachelor of Science Degree in this new program. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. After graduation Herb started his working career with the Gladieux Corp. in Toledo. He worked for the company for 53 years and served as its president for 17 of those years at a time when the company grew to be one of the largest and most diversified contract food service management companies in the country, having operations at over 1,200 locations in 34 states and Canada, with over 24,000 employees. Herb enjoyed racing sailboats and playing golf. He had his first sailboat at age 10 and as he grew older the boats got much larger. He won the National Sailing Championships twice in the Interlake Class and was a member of the United States Sailing Team in the Dragon Class that participated in the 1958 Pan American Games. In 1985 he converted to powerboats and spent many more years cruising all of the Great Lakes with his family and friends. In 1961 he was one of the founders of the North Cape Yacht Club located at the Toledo Beach Marina in LaSalle, MI. Herb enjoyed golf and the competition that came with it. He was a member of Highland Meadows and Riverby Hills Golf Clubs over the combined period of 47 years. During that period of time he made six holes-in-ones and scored his age many times. Herb is survived by a daughter, Dr. Lesley Gill of Nashville, TN, a son, Marshall Gill of Perrysburg, and a grandson, Milo Gill also of Perrysburg. As per Herb’s wishes there will be no visitation or funeral services. Arrangements were entrusted to Witzler-Shank Funeral home, 222 E. South Boundary St., Perrysburg, OH 43551 (419-874-3133).
