Herbert W Gettys

Herbert “Herb” W. Gettys, 82, of Catawba Island, OH passed away Sunday, November 12, 2023 at his home after an extended illness. He was born on November 2, 1941 in Defiance, OH to Walter and Mildred (Herbert) Gettys. He served in the U.S. Army National Guard and U.S. Army Reserves. On November 9, 1996 in Adrian, MI he married Cecelia M. Ford, and she survives. Herb worked as a maintenance supervisor for General Motors Foundry for 43 years, retiring in 2000. He was a longtime member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Port Clinton. Herb’s faith journey was lifelong. His strong belief in God as Our Father and Our Creator made him a pro-life advocate and defender of the born and unborn.

Herb enjoyed vacationing in Florida and was an avid boater and tennis player. He was a talented and creative person, who could bring out the hidden beauty in discarded items. Herb was a perfectionist in his work and known to be able to fix just about anything. Herb loved his family, especially his grandchildren. His presence and sense of humor will be greatly missed.

In addition to his loving wife of 27 years, Cecelia, Herb is survived by his children, Dawn (Jay) McMillen, Terri (Patrick) Roberts, Jim (Michelle) Gettys, Heather (Dena Harvill) Gettys, Ann (Jim) Walsh, and Matthew Creager, 11 beloved grandchildren, and 8 beloved great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother, Roy Gettys, sister, Agnes Davidson, and an infant great granddaughter.

Visitation for Herb will be Tuesday, November 14, 2023 from 6-8 p.m., with a Rosary Service conducted by Father James Brown at 8:00 p.m. at the Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, 216 Washington St., Port Clinton, OH. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Father Jonathan Wight 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 15, 2023 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 414 Madison St., Port Clinton, OH with burial to follow in Catawba Island Cemetery, Catawba Island Township.
