Henry C. Gurtz, 98, of Catawba Island, OH, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at Trueman Pointe Care Center in Hilliard, OH, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on March 1, 1927, in Sandusky, OH, to Carl H. and Lucille M. (Prediger) Gurtz.
Hank graduated from Margaretta High School in 1944 and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in engineering from the University of Toledo in 1950. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the World War II era. On November 18, 1953, he married Muriel L. "Mert" Stout, who preceded him in death in 2009.
Hank worked as an engineering superintendent for the U.S. Gypsum Company for 40+ years, retiring in 1987.
A devoted and engaged member of his community, Hank was a charter member and longtime council member of Resurrection Lutheran Church on Catawba Island. He also served for many years on the John Brown Park Board, was a longtime member of the Catawba Island Club, a past Exalted Ruler and proud member of the Elks Lodge, and a member of the Sandusky American Legion.
Hank enjoyed a wide range of hobbies throughout his long and active life, including bowling, golfing, playing cards, fishing, and boating. He had a particular love for photography and became known as the "official photographer" at Resurrection Lutheran Church and The Chalet at Ohio Living on Catawba. Above all, Hank will be remembered as a caring, dedicated, and deeply devoted family man.
He is survived by his daughters, Cindy (Mark) Slobodian and Glenna (Mike) Lykens; his son, Steve (Tammy) Gurtz; his grandchildren, Kristin (Nate) Whittington, Kelley (Malcolm Johnson) Lykens, Emily (Matt) Siegel, Justin Gurtz, and Patrick Gurtz; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mert; and his sister, Dorothy Adams.
Funeral services for Henry will be conducted by Pastor John Hazzard at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at Resurrection Lutheran Church, 2370 NE Catawba Rd., Port Clinton, OH, followed by a luncheon in the fellowship hall. Visitation will be from 10:30-11:00 a.m. prior to the service. Private interment will take place in Catawba Island Cemetery.
