Helmut T. Schirm

With great sorrow we regret to report the death of our loving husband, father, and grandfather. Helmut, age 89, passed away Monday, October 31, 2016 at the Franciscan Care Center. He was born in Dusseldorf, Germany to Willy and Ellen Schirm. Helmut came to the United States on a Fulbright Scholarship. He was a talented mechanical engineer and the recipient of several patents. Helmut worked at Owens Illinois and ended his career at Sun Refining. He often spoke to school groups and organizations about his life in Germany during WWII. He also volunteered his talents to family, friends, and organizations. He was presently a member of the Toledo Club. Helmut was the beloved husband of 61 years to Beatrice; dear father to Jeffrey (Susette) and Gwen Clark (John); and proud grandfather (Opa) to Krista Schirm, and Ellen and Emily Clark. He is also survived by a niece and two nephews in Germany. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Joachim and Hardy. Hal cherished his family, friends, and adopted country. Auf wiedersehen my love until we can again walk together hand in hand. Special thanks to Sr. Mary Jordan and the wonderful, caring staff of the Franciscan Center.
