Helen Catherine ONeill, 88, of Toledo, died Monday, February 13, 2012 at Sunset House. She was born April 2, 1923 in Toledo to the late William T. and Nellie E. Schlagheck Skelly. She married Thomas R. ONeill on September 25, 1954 and he preceded her in death on July 30, 1986. A graduate of St. Ursula Academy and St. Vincents School of Nursing, Helen worked as a registered nurse with St. Vincent Hospital, Dr. I.H. Kass, and the Child Study Institute. She also served in the United States Navy Nurse Corps during World War II. Helen was a lifelong member of Blessed Sacrament Parish serving in various ways including: Rosary Altar Society, small faith groups, funeral luncheon committee, and on the RCIA team. She had recently been attending St. Pius X Parish after moving in with her daughter. In her free time, Helen enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, including St. Ursula alumni with whom she regularly met for lunch. She also appreciated the beauty of many different flowers and loved gardening. A selfless and giving woman who was fiercely independent, she always embraced the needs of others and never had a negative word to say about another. Helen will also be remembered for her love of parties, great sense of humor, and for her famous Irish sayings. Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Thomas R. ONeill, Mary S. Schneider James, and Patricia O. Thomas Paul; grandchildren, Thomas R. III and Sean K. ONeill, James T. Schneider II, Jennifer L. Allen, David M. ONeill, Kelly L., Connor M., Ryan P. and Sean P. Thomas; great grandchildren, Katie ONeill, Lily A. Schneider, Aiden and Jackson ONeill; brother, William G. Skelly; niece and goddaughter, Barbara Rezutko; and nephew, Tom Skelly. She was also preceded in death by a son in infancy. Visitation will be Thursday from 2-8 p.m. in the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave. west of Corey Rd. where scripture services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will begin in the funeral home on Friday, February 17, 2012, with prayers at 10:00 a.m. and proceed to St. Pius X Catholic Church, 3011 Carskaddon, for Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Military rites and burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
