Helen Christine McDaniel, born January 29, 1960, in Mason, Michigan, passed away on February 26, 2026, in Toledo, Ohio. Born to Elliot and Gracie McDaniel, Helen grew up surrounded by the lively energy of a large family and carried that deep sense of care and responsibility throughout her life. Though she was born in Mason, she always considered Jackson, Michigan, to be home.
From a young age, Helen's nurturing spirit was unmistakable. As an older sister, she naturally stepped into a motherly role with her younger siblings, offering guidance, protection, and love. That same devotion only grew stronger when she became a mother herself. Her children were the center of her world, and she worked tirelessly-whether in factories or at Walmart-to ensure they were supported, cared for, and deeply loved. Hard work was never something she shied away from; it was something she embraced for the sake of her family.
Helen found joy in life's simple beauties. She loved flowers, especially roses, and took pride in tending to small gardens that brought her happiness. Animals were a constant presence in her life as well. Dogs, cats, fish, and birds all found a place in her home and heart. Recently, she had the companionship of Teddy (an Australian sheep dog) and Buddy "Nugget" (a Chiweenie mix), who were never far away while she watched Stranger Things with daughter Mary.
Music was another source of joy for Helen. A devoted Elvis Presley fan, she cherished the opportunity to visit Graceland. One of her most meaningful trips was visiting the home of Loretta Lynn, where she shared her love of country music with her son Brad. In her later years, one of her greatest joys was traveling to Jackson, Ohio to meet and spend time with her beloved great-grandson.
Her Southern Baptist faith was a steady foundation throughout her life, and gospel hymns were a familiar comfort she carried with her.
Helen is survived by her children: Mary Rich, James Harmon, and Brad Ford; her grandchildren: Dustin and Gabriel Rich; her great-grandson Zaden; her siblings: Elliot (Shirley), Chuck, Eddie, and Shelvey; and her boyfriend, Kenny. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elliot and Gracie; her siblings, Ernie, Dolly, and Peggy; and her infant son, Mark.
Helen will be remembered for her unwavering love, her resilience, her generosity, and the quiet strength she carried through every chapter of her life. Her legacy lives on in the family she cherished above all else. Services will be held in Jackson, Michigan through Burden & Patience-Montgomery Funeral Home, and will be announced shortly.
