Helen E. Gill

May 9, 1925 — September 10, 2012

Helen Gill, age 87, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2012 at Heartland of Waterville Care Center. Helen was born to Anthony and Mary Waltzer on May 9, 1925 in Detroit, MI. She attended St. Catherines Grade School and graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1943. After graduation, Helen worked in the payroll department of Toledo Scale until 1947. On July 4, 1947, she married John Harland Gill at St. Catherines Church in Toledo. Helen was President of the 180th Tactical Fighter Group Officers Wives Club, Ohio Air National Guard. She was also past president of the Little Flower Alter and Rosary Society. Helen loved politics and frequently submitted Letters to the Editor to the Toledo Blade where many of her editorials were ultimately published. Her hobbies included photography, bowling, and watching football. She also loved golf and won the Womens Club Championship at Spuyten Duyval Golf Course. Helen was well known for her razor-sharp wit, fierce competitive nature, and strong intellect. She loved to make people laugh, and lit up every room she was in with her feisty nature. Nana always did things her way. She was audacious and authentic- we will miss her deeply. Helen is survived by her children, Denny Candy Cousino Gill, Jonelyn Dave Hutchinson, Kelly Mary Jo Gill, and Shannon Drew Perkins; grandchildren Jason and Toby Tracy Roscoe, John Jennifer, Darcy, Matt, Sean, Patrick and Kerrie Gill, Julie Heath Farwell and Andy Stephanie Robinson Worner; 6 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Gill; and brother, John Waltzer. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Heartland of Waterville for their care and compassion for Helen the last fourteen months. Visitation will be Wednesday, September 12, 2012 from 2-8:00pm at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. west of Corey Rd. where services will begin with prayers Thursday at 10:15am followed by the Mass of the Resurrection at 11:00am at Little Flower Catholic Church, 5562 Dorr St., Toledo.
