Heinrich J. "Hank" Ortag, Jr.

Heinrich J. “Hank” Ortag, Jr., 83, of Port Clinton, OH passed away Saturday, December 11, 2021 at his residence. He was born on May 27, 1938 in Cleveland, OH to Heinrich and Catherine (Zirm) Ortag, Sr. On March 3, 1960 in Cleveland, OH he married Yolanda E. Pirri, and she preceded him in death in 2001. Hank and Yolanda met while roller skating in Cleveland and he had to work on her awhile for her to skate with him let alone eventually date him. Hank served in the U.S. Marines and then the U.S. Air Force. After he got out of the service he worked at William Feather Printing Company in Cleveland, OH and subsequently took the Civil Service Exam and found his niche as a police officer for the Cleveland Police Department for 25 years, retiring in 1985. Hank then volunteered as an advanced E.M.T. and Fireman. Hank was a volunteer fireman and E.M.T. for Erie Township in LaCarne, OH, a member of the former Loyal Order of the Moose #1610 in Port Clinton, the Eagles in Port Clinton, V.F.W. Lifetime member in Port Clinton, and the Cleveland Police Patrolman’s Association, The Blue Knights Motorcycle Club, Fraternal Order of Police, Masonic Lodge F&AM, 32nd Degree Mason, Eastern Star, Zenobia Shriners of Toledo, and the Grotto in Sandusky. He enjoyed shooting and collecting guns. Hank was a sharpshooter in the police force and earned several trophies for his skills. He also served on the Tactical Unit “S.W.A.T. Team” in Cleveland. He loved riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle and even drove all the way to Alaska on his bike by himself. Hank enjoyed fishing, driving a semi-truck when he was first married, traveling in a motorhome with his wife, skydiving without his wife’s blessing, and racing his corvette on the oval track, where he was known as the “Flying Fuzz”. Hank was a always on the go and enjoyed getting the most out of life. Hank is survived by his children, Kim M. (Richard) McConnell, Bonnie A. (Richard) Grebe, and Deborah Ortag Munsell, grandchildren, Sarah H. Denkins, Crystal J. (David) Cross, Joseph C. Read, and Debora A. (Adam) Junior, 9 great grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son, George Willsey, great granddaughter, Courtney Zajdowicz, and sister, Johanna Ortag. A Celebration of Life for Hank will be conducted 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 28, 2021 at the Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, 216 Washington St., Port Clinton, OH with a time of gathering one hour prior to the services. Burial will take place at a later date with military graveside services at LaCarpe Cemetery, LaCarne, OH. Memorial contributions in memory of Hank can be given to Erie Township Volunteer Fire Department and E.M.S. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.walkerfuneralhomes.com.
