Harry D. Young

Harry Don Young passed away at his home, surrounded by his loving family on January 5, 2014 at the age of 82. He fought a courageous battle against cancer, continuing his work and activities until just recently. Harry was an only child born on September 10, 1931 to Donald and Ruth Young in Richmond Kentucky. When he was in 8th grade he moved to Toledo where he graduated from Scott High School in 1950. After high school he joined the Air Force and served in the Korean War from 1951 to 1954. After returning from the service Harry began work as a painting contractor and worked in the construction field. Then, Harry met his lovely bride Marlene Roberts and they were married on May 10, 1958. They were happily married for 56 years and had two sons Kevin and Keith. Later Harry started his own construction companies such as Oak Knoll Builders and Harry Young Builders, known for their custom built homes. Harrys passion for baseball began in the 1960s coaching Little League and then Jr. and Sr. Knothole Leagues for his sons. This gave him the opportunity to instill in his players the love of the game. Harry coached many of these players into their adult life through Federation and Roy Hobbs Baseball Leagues. His mentoring effect was evident when this year many of these players came back to play for Harry one more time. In 2013, Harrys Mid-American Masters Baseball League Team completed a perfect season with a 20-0 record. Remarkably, in October, this same team wanted to Take it to Florida and participate in the Roy Hobbs World Series in Ft. Myers, Florida. There, Harry was inducted into the Roy Hobbs Hall of Fame. The Harry Young Builders finished in 2nd place out of 65 teams and they voted Harry their Co- MVP, as they felt he demonstrated all the strength and dedication it takes to be an outstanding baseball team player. The team members will always keep Harry in their hearts by staying Forever Young and continuing his legacy by playing baseball in his honor. Harry was preceded in death by his parents Ruth and Donald. He is survived by his loving wife Marlene, his sons, Kevin Lisa and Keith Tanya, his grandchildren Jamie Scott Horrell, Lori Andy Horrell, Lauren Nick Kasprzak, Matt Young, Heather Leis, Nicole Sallows, Jordan Young and 7 great grandchildren and his baseball family. Family and friends may visit at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. west of Corey Rd., Friday, January 10 from 2-8 pm and Saturday, January 11 from 11 am until the time of Harrys memorial service at 1 pm.
