Harold Omer George

Harold O. Hap George, 97, a lifelong resident of Fremont, OH, passed away Sunday, June 22, 2008 at Riverview Healthcare, Oak Harbor, OH. He was born on January 17, 1911 in Fremont, OH, the son of Jay and Lillian Delauter George. Hap attended Fremont Ross High School and Western Michigan University. On July 27, 1940 in Fremont, OH, he married Marguerite Peg Hyslop and she preceded him in death on March 30, 1997. Harold worked as a rubber chemist for Standard Products until the 1950s, and later he worked for the American Synthetic Rubber Corp. in Louisville, KY, retiring in 1973. He was nominated in the Whos Who in America for Rubber Chemistry in 1972. Hap was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Fremont, where he had served as an elder. He was an accomplished athlete and played high school football, basketball and track. Hap was elected to the Fremont Ross High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998, a two time Fremont Country Club Golf Champ and Runner Up Three Times and was voted an Honorary Member, Fremont Elks Club #169 life member, 32nd Degree Mason of the Fremont Masonic Brainard Lodge #336 and was very active in the Fremont Kiwanis Club for many years. He also was a member and past Commodore in 1973 of the Port Clinton Yacht Club, Zenobia Temple of the Shriners and the choral group called The Chanters. Hap was an avid outdoorsman and boater. He will be greatly missed by his loving family and friends. Survivors include: Sons: Dr. David Patricia George of Port Clinton, OH and Robert George of Grand Rapids, MI; 2 Grandchildren; 3 Step-Grandchildren: 4 Great-Grandchildren; Sister: Betty Sheldon of Tiffin, OH. Hap was preceded in death by his wife, parents and 8 brothers and sisters. There will be no visitation. Funeral Services will be private at a later date. Memorial contributions in memory of Hap may be given to Fremont Ross Harmon Field/Don Paul Stadium Project, Port Clinton Yacht Club Jr. Sailing Fleet or Stein Hospice.
