Harold came to his final destination on March 27, 2008 after a brief stay at Hospice. He was born on June 24, 1921 in Hastings, MI, to Mary Bower and Charles Clabaugh, of Toledo, OH. A 1939 graduate of J.W. Scott High School, Harold continued his education at the University of Toledo until he was called to military duty in 1943. He served in the U.S. Army until 1946, where he taught chemical warfare practices and technologies, and was selected for further education at the University of Maine in the school of Engineering. Harold served as a machine gunner in the 26th Infantry Division as well as a Combat Wireman. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, a Bronze Star, and two Purple Hearts. Harold married longtime sweetheart and Trianon dance partner Thelma Simos on March 6, 1944. His honeymoon leave was cut short when he was summoned to return to active duty 3 days later. Discharged in 1946, Harold returned to Toledo to resume his life with Thelma. He continued his education in the field of accounting at the University of Toledo. Harold started his accounting career at Davison Associates, where he later became CFO and part-owner. After having sold the business in 1972, Harold worked for Freeman Supply and capped his career as Divisional Controller and IT Manager for Verd-A-Ray Corporation, a division of Phillips Lighting. In retirement, Harold and Thelma traveled extensively in the United States, Canada and Mexico. They enjoyed repeated vacations to Europe and cruises in the Caribbean. They were members of Sylvania Country Club and numerous dance groups. Harold was a man of many talents and interests including photography, home remodeling and repair, holistic healing, and the sciences. Harold was life-long learner, always seeking to understand his world. Perhaps his strongest trait was his delight in welcoming people and making them laugh. Harold is survived by his son, Robert Debra Clabaugh, of Woodville, OH; daughters, Janet Danny Headrick of Virginia Beach, VA, and Barbara Clabaugh of Ft. Lauderdale, FL.; and grandchildren Leigh Clabaugh of Woodville, OH, and Cara Headrick of Virginia Beach, VA. Friends may visit the family on Monday from 11:00 AM-1:00 PM at the Walker Funeral Home 5155 Sylvania Ave. west of Corey Rd where services will be held 1:00 PM at the Funeral Home followed by interment at Toledo Memorial Park. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
