Harold V. Ashley, 90, of Oak Harbor, died Thursday, July 17, 2014, at Otterbein-North Shore Retirement Village. Harold was born May 28, 1924, in Canton, Ohio, to Ernest and Dixie K. (Bentz) Ashley. During WWII Harold served in the U.S. Navy, on the USS Indianapolis. He graduated from The Ohio State University after his military service. Harold married the former Virginia L. Egger, in Woodville, Ohio, on July 30, 1955, and she preceded him in death, February 8, 2007. In 1989, Harold retired from 35 years teaching at Benton-Carroll-Salem Schools in Oak Harbor, where he shared his love of science. He was a proud member of The Ohio State University Alumni of Ottawa County and a member of the Black Swamp Bird Observatory. He enjoyed traveling; Harold and Virginia had visited Alaska, Europe, the Galapagos Islands, and New Zealand. He is survived by his sons, Christopher (Laurel) Ashley of Oak Harbor, Charles (Kathy) Ashley of Norristown, PA, and daughter, Mary Ashley of Chicago, IL, and eight grandchildren. His parents and sister, Mildred Ashley, also preceded him in death. Visitation for Harold will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Sunday, July 20, 2014, at the Robinson-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, 165 E. Water St., Oak Harbor, where the funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 21, 2014. Military graveside services will be held by the Oak Harbor American Legion and V.F.W. at Salem Township Union Cemetery following the funeral. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorial contributions to a future educational scholarship in memory of Harold and Virginia Ashley.
