Gunther B. Gus Ambil

September 19, 1944 — January 14, 2016

Gunther “Gus” Ambil passed away peacefully on January 14, 2016 with his family by his side. Gus was born in Munich, Germany in 1944. He immigrated to the United States in 1952 along with his mother, Elizabeth, father, Wilhelm Sr., sisters, Gusti and Bridget, and brother Wilhelm Jr., leaving another sister, Hildegard, in Germany. He grew up in Toledo, OH and graduated from Rogers High School in 1963. Gus was drafted into the Army and received an Honorable Discharge in 1970. Throughout his life he worked at Doehler-Jarvis, Vroman Foods, Penske Truck Leasing, and he retired as a truck driver from Omnisource in 2003. Gus was also very proud of the years he served as a volunteer fireman for Springfield Township in the 1980’s as well as his membership at the Holland American Legion Post 646. Gus met the love of his life, Marilyn, in the 1970’s. Together, they raised Marilyn’s three children, Renee, Scott, and Ryan. Marilyn and the kids were the light of his life and he cherished many precious memories with all of them. Upon retirement, Gus spent his remaining years caring for his loving wife, Marilyn. As Marilyn fought the effects of dementia, Gus was at her side every step of the way as a devoted husband. Friends and family are forever grateful for his dedication in making sure Marilyn was always cared for. Gus is survived by his wife, Marilyn, stepdaughter Renee (Matt) Cooper, stepsons Scott (Tricia) Rigney and Ryan (Stacey) Rigney, seven grandchildren, Zachary, Erica, Jack, Lindsay, Reese, Easton, and Dane, and one great-grandchild, Jaimison. He is also survived by many special nieces and nephews. Gus was preceded in death by his parents, Wilhelm Sr. and Elizabeth, sisters, Gusti and Bridget, and brother Willie “Hans”. Friends will be received on Monday, January 18, 2016 from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. in the Neville Funeral Home, Southwest Chapel, 7438 Airport Highway, Holland, Ohio 43528 (419-865-8879). Visitation will continue at the funeral home on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. with funeral services following the visitation at 11:00. Burial will be held at Springfield Township Cemetery. Special thanks to all the wonderful caregivers at St. Luke’s Hospital, Spring Meadows Senior Community, and Senior Independence Hospice for their tender care over the past several weeks. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider these organizations.
