Greg M. Waggoner, 51, of Port Clinton, died Saturday, February 13, 2010 at the Cleveland Clinic. He was born on April 7, 1958 in Port Clinton to Don C. and Maxine R. Brindley Waggoner. Greg graduated from Port Clinton High School in 1976. Greg started his public safety career with Sandusky County EMS as a paramedic in 1981 and also volunteered with the Port Clinton Fire and EMS Departments beginning in 1978. He became Port Clintons first licensed paramedic in 1979, and served as the only paramedic for almost 15 years. He served as a paramedic with Put-in-Bay EMS and worked for various private ambulance companies in the tri-county area. In 1986, Greg earned his professional firefighter certification and went on to serve as one of Ottawa Countys Arson Investigators for over ten years. He worked for Perkins Township Fire Department from 1993-2003 as a paramedic and firefighter and was on the Hazardous Materials Response teams for Erie and Ottawa Counties for 10 years. He was a fire instructor in Ottawa and Erie counties and helped train new professionals since 1992. After 25 years of service as a paramedic and firefighter, Greg retired in 2003. For the last 5 years, Greg has worked as a Lieutenant in the Port Clinton/Portage Twp. Fire District as the Fire Inspector. Greg was a former American Red Cross volunteer and CPR instructor, played drums for the Playmakers Civic Theatre in Port Clinton and Fremont Community Theatre in Fremont, and enjoyed commercial two-way radios. Greg was also an avid cocker spaniel lover, leaving behind his canine companion Jett. Greg is survived by his loving family: parents: Don and Maxine Waggoner of Port Clinton; brother: Jeffrey Deborah Waggoner of Clarendon Hills, IL; step-daughters: Lauren Yeagle of Huron, OH and Leslie Aaron Moore of Port Clinton; niece: Melissa Matthew Schlesinger and nephew: Brian Waggoner both of Illinois; 2 great nieces: Emily and Elyse Schlesinger; former wife: Sandy Waggoner of Norwalk, OH; and aunts: Lois Gates and Carolyn Ronald Tewers both of Port Clinton. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents: Fred and Luetta Brindley and paternal grandparents: Carl and Elsie Waggoner. Visitation will be Wednesday, February 17, 2010 from 2-8 p.m., with family present from 2-4 6-8 p.m., at the Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home Crematory, 216 Washington St., Port Clinton, with a Firemans Service conducted at 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m., Thursday, February 18, 2010 at the funeral home with full Firemans Service Honors with interment to follow in Riverview Cemetery, Port Clinton. Memorial contributions may be given to the Immune Deficiency Foundation, Port Clinton Firefighters Association, or the Ottawa County Humane Society.
