Grace Yarnell Rowand, 83, who had a kind heart and never knew a stranger, passed away surrounded by the family she loved October 22, 2013 in Perrysburg, Ohio where she resided. She was born in Akron, Ohio on January 18, 1930 to Harold A. Yarnell and Mary A. (Smreck) Yarnell. Graduate of DeVilbiss High School class of 1948, where Grace met Daniel C. Rowand to whom she later married. Grace also attended the University of Toledo. Grace enjoyed being a girl scout leader and was a member of Maumee Valley Girl Scout Council for 25 years. In 1975, she took her senior troop on a month long European camping trip. She also served on the Girl Scout Board of Directors as Vice President and was a conference director for an adult leader conference at Camp Libbey. At age 60 Grace studied Japanese which led her to volunteer as a Conversational Colleague to different groups of Japanese teachers at the University of Toledo. She developed a close friendship with many of the Japanese teachers which led to two trips to Japan. She became an American mom to one of her friend’s son, Shin, who attended the university here in the United States and later married and settled here. Grace also volunteered delivering dinners to Senior Citizens in Perrysburg. She was a member of the Perrysburg Garden Club, Perrysburg Boat Club, and St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church. Grace moved to Marco Island, Florida in 1996 with her husband when he retired. They joined the sailing club SAMI on Marco Island and enjoyed the many outdoor activities that Florida provided. They also enjoyed traveling all over the world including a trip to Tibet. They moved back from Florida to Perrysburg in 2004. Surviving is her loving husband and best friend just short of 63 years, Daniel C. Rowand: three lovely daughters, Christine Guernsey (Paul) of Colleyville, Texas, Cathie Rowand of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Carol Volpe (Paul) of University Heights, Ohio and semi adopted son Shin Sawada of Robbinsville, New Jersey. She was the loving and proud grandmother of Stephanie Bursa, Paul, Daniel and Michael Volpe. Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 27, 2013 from 2:00 to 5:00 P.M. and 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. in the Witzler-Shank Funeral Home, 222 E.S. Boundary St., Perrysburg, Ohio 43551 (419- 874-3133). Visitation will continue on Monday, October 28 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, 871 E. Boundary St., Perrysburg, Ohio, 43551 where funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Burial will be held privately. In memory of Grace, suggested memorials are Hospice of Northwest Ohio, or St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church.
