Gloria Hoover

August 2, 1928 — May 10, 2021

Gloria Hoover, 92, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 10, 2021, at the Ebeid Hospice Care Center in Sylvania. She was born in Toledo, Ohio on August 2, 1928. Gloria grew up and lived in what is now Old Orchard and graduated from DeVilbiss High School in 1946. After high school, Gloria attended Toledo University and graduated in 1953 with her Educational teaching degree. She went on to teach 5th grade at Old Orchard Elementary. Gloria was a life-long member of Hope Lutheran Church and married the love of her life, John Walter Hoover, there in 1954. She and “Walt” were married for 62 years before his passing in 2016. Gloria was an extremely talented artist and was also very active as an avid antiques collector. She would eventually start Maumee Valley Liquidators. Gloria and Walt “retired” in 1985 at Ocean Isle Beach, NC. The desire to continue to stay active was still in their hearts and the decision was made that they would open the IGLOO, a frozen yogurt destination in Calabash, NC in 1987. For the next 15 years, the IGLOO would become a well know tourist stop for vacationers in the area and many would keep coming back year after year as part of their vacation ritual. Both Gloria and her husband Walt, came back to Sylvania in 2003 to be closer to family. Gloria remained active in rejoining her daughter’s Maumee Valley Liquidators business and in fact, was still assisting with duties until just a few weeks prior to her death. Gloria enjoyed spending time with her family and was so very proud of all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. Gloria is survived by her children; daughter, Cyndy (Ford) Weber; sons, John (Kelly) Hoover; Chris (Felicia) Hoover; grandchildren: Jennifer (Justin) and Sarah Weber; John (Steph) Hoover, Stephanie (Tim) Kelley, Caroline (Gary) Hoover, Christopher Hoover, Jacqueline (Colin) Pettiford, and Zach Hoover; triplets, Emily, Faith, and Hannah Hoover; and great-grandchildren, Patrick and Julianne Hoover, James and George Kelley, and Lucas Pettiford, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother, Ellen Mallory. There will be a private family service held and a memorial celebration will be planned at a later date.
