Our loving and devoted father, Royal Glenn Wagner, 86, returned home to be with his lord and savior, Jesus Christ, early on Saturday morning, August 4. He will always be remembered for his deeply caring nature, his sense of humor, and his love for lively debate. Royal was born November 16, 1931, the eighth of nine children, to Elmer and Laurena (Starkey) Wagner. He was a 1949 graduate of Woodward High School and briefly attended college at Bowling Green and Toledo Universities. After a brief time playing semi-professional football in Toledo, he entered the family plumbing business, Wagner Plumbing and Heating, founded by his father in 1919. Royal was a skilled master plumber, owning and operating the business until his retirement. On May 22, 1954, Royal married the love of his life, Phyllis Draheim. They moved to a house he built in West Toledo where they raised their three sons. The Wagner home often hosted friends and family for holidays and other celebrations through the years. Royal loved being active in his community. While his children were growing up, he coached baseball and football for several years. He was a Freemason, a member and past President of Collingwood Lodge. He was also a member of the West Toledo Exchange Club. Royal had a strong faith and attended Salem Lutheran Church where he was active in the church council, serving as president. Later, he attended Augsburg Lutheran Church and Westgate Chapel. Over the years, he always lived his faith through his actions, helping others who were less fortunate and visiting the infirmed. Royal enjoyed many hobbies over the years, including golf, bowling, stamp and coin collecting. He also loved to travel and would take his family on a vacation every summer. Left to cherish and honor his memory are sons, Gary (Deborah) Wagner, Craig (Jane) Wagner, and Brian (Pamela) Wagner; grandchildren, Eric, Lauren, Jacqueline, Nicholas, Kevin, Sarah, Christopher, Abbie, Ashley, and Allison; 12 great-grandchildren; and his brother, Elmer Wagner of Tacoma, Washington; and many nieces and nephews. Royal was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis; his parents; and siblings, Geneva, Howard, Allen, Carolyn, Flora, June, and Laurena. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 8, 2018 from 2 until 9 p.m. at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave. in Sylvania Township (west of Corey Rd). Masonic funeral rites will take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. Funeral Services will begin at 11am on Thursday, August 9, 2018 at Westgate Chapel, 2500 Wilford Dr. Toledo, OH with burial following at Toledo Memorial Park. Friends and family are welcomed to a fellowship at Westgate Chapel following the services.
