Gerald M. Charles

Gerald M. Charles, 88, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2026. He was born January 21, 1938, in Rockford, Illinois, to Kenneth and Freida Charles.

Gerald was a graduate of Macomber High School. He went on to build a long career with General Motors, where he worked as an inspector for 30 years before retiring in 1992. He also enjoyed being a part owner of Grand Rapids Market in Grand Rapids, Ohio, where he was involved for about 15 years.

On Valentine's Day, February 14, 1959, Gerald married Diana Loomis. They shared 64 years of marriage and many wonderful memories together.

Gerald had a fun-loving personality and enjoyed the things that brought him happiness throughout the years. In his younger years, he enjoyed bowling. Later in life, he especially enjoyed visiting casinos and trying his luck. He was a huge sports fan and followed NASCAR, the Cleveland Indians, and the Michigan Wolverines. When it came to football, his favorite quarterback of all time was Tom Brady.

Gerald could always be found supporting local taverns and the friendships, conversations, and camaraderie that came with being a familiar face in the community.

He is survived by his children, Jerry (Kathy) Charles, Julie Rice, Carrilyn Powell, Lisa (Kevin) Johnson, Denise (Jon) Cook, and David (Stephanie) Charles; siblings, Gene Charles and Linda (Tom) Quertinmont; 9 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Gerald was preceded in death by his wife, Diana Charles and brother, Ronald Charles.

Family and Friends may visit Friday, October 9, 2026, from 10 am-12 pm at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. The Funeral Service will follow at 12 pm in the funeral home. Gerald will be laid to rest in Toledo Memorial Park.
