George Zemper, 88, a life-long resident of Toledo, passed away on Dec. 24, 2014, at St. Clare Commons, in Perrysburg, OH. George was born Nov. 16, 1926, to David and Marguerite (McMahon) Zemper of Toledo. He married Dorothy Schlachter on Oct. 9, 1954 and the couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this fall. George was a proud World War II Veteran, and served as an Intelligence NCO (Staff Sergeant) with the 98th Infantry (Wolfhounds). George accompanied by his son Jude, had a wonderful time on his Honor Flight on June 22, 2011. George worked with various Toledo companies retiring as a production scheduler from the DeVilbiss Company in 1988. George was an active member of St. Jude’s Parish. He was involved in many community organizations, including the Big Brothers (Big Brother to Ken Norman), Knights of Columbus, Catholic War Veterans, American Legion, YMCA Indian Guides, Boy Scouts, school sports and band booster clubs, etc. George loved his family, dancing with Dorothy, playing cards, golfing, and his favorite hobby – talking with people. He enjoyed his retirement years, working part-time, traveling extensively with Dorothy, and visiting family and friends. Throughout his life, he was hard working, kind, honest, friendly, and accepting of others. He was truly rich in the friendship and love of his family and his many friends. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Dorothy, their 6 children: Amy (Tom) Gargas; Jennifer (Jim) Gilmore; Melinda (Keith) Gehring; Jude (Pam) Zemper; Claire (Todd) Kozlowski; and David (Amy) Zemper, 14 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. George was preceded in death by his parents, David Zemper and Marguerite McMahon; step-father, Frank Early; his sisters, Bette Beidleman, Kitty Evener, and Connie Mock, and many much-loved family members and friends who will welcome him into heaven. Always one to enjoy a party, there will surely be a big one when he arrives. Friends will be received at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey) on Friday January 2, from 3-8 PM. Visitation will continue Saturday, January 3 after 10 AM in Christ the King Catholic Church, 4100 Harvest Lane, Toledo where the funeral mass will follow at 11 AM. Interment will be private.
