For the first 92 of his 94 years of life, George Schlaudecker was never a patient in a hospital. He was born at home in a snowstorm in Erie, Pennsylvania on February 10, 1917, to Herbert and Eleanor Franz Schlaudecker and died on June 14, 2011. Always an outstanding student, George excelled in Chemical Engineering at the University of Notre Dame and received his masters from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology MIT. Prior to World War II he accepted a job at DuPont working on secret projects for the U.S. government. He never spoke of these activities. George married his Erie sweetheart, Marion Sheehan, in 1940. During his years with DuPont, his sons H. William and John P. were born. After the war, the family moved to Toledo, Ohio, where George designed a chemical plant. After that project, he and his brother-in law, Francis Joyce, and another partner created Maumee Chemical to design and manufacture saccharin and other specialty chemicals. His youngest son, David, was born during this exciting time. George was President of Maumee Chemical until its sale to Sherwin Williams in Cleveland. He was then a member of the Board of Directors and a Senior Vice President at Sherwin Williams. After his retirement and the death of Marion in 1978, George returned to Toledo and married Betty Rumpf in 1980. Together they enjoyed wonderful years filled with family, friends, a party home on Catawba Island, an RV that was never idle and wonderful holidays with their blended family. George is survived by Betty, his sons Bill Kathleen of Portland, OR., and David Cindy and their three children: Jeffrey Elizabeth, Christa, and Martha Thomas Rich. George has three living stepsons: James Sheri, Jeffrey Teri, Thomas Pam, and Sharon Rumpf. Together, George and Betty have 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The family is grateful for the terrific and loving support provided by the staff of Kingston of Sylvania, Hospice of NWO and Dr. Christopher Bates. George believed strongly in education and established scholarships for Catholic education from kindergarten through college. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Schlaudecker Scholarship funds at St. Francis de Sales High School or Central City Ministries of Toledo. A scientist to the end, George donated his body to UTMC. The family will receive visitors at the Walker Funeral Home on Sylvania Ave. on Sunday, June 19 from 2:00 5:00 p.m. A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Monday, June 20, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Corpus Christi University Parish.
