George Kilby Hammond

HAMMOND George Kilby George Kilby Hammond, 86, died suddenly on August 4th, 2008, at his home at Sunset House in Toledo, Ohio. Mr. Hammond graduated from Colgate University, finishing the chemical engineering four year program in three years. He immediately joined Owens-Corning Fiberglas. For much of his career with Owens-Corning, he was involved with their insulation products and went on to manage their Underground Tank Division; however, his fondest memory was his extensive involvement in the production of the first Corvette, the body of which was made of fiberglass. Upon his retirement, Mr. Hammond became associated with Effler Schmidt Realty of Toledo. He and his wife Edna were very supportive of the Toledo Museum of Art and The Aurora House. They were also members of The Toledo Club and the Toledo Country Club. In 2004 they moved to Marina del Rey, California, and continued to enjoy their summer home in Mattituck, New York. Upon the death of his wife in 2006, Mr.Hammond returned to make his home in Toledo. Mr. Hammond is survived by his children, Holly Michael Lenhardt and their sons, David and Stephen of Rockaway, NJ; Leslie Edward Coll and their children, Beth and John of Barkhamsted, CT; and Clark Kelly Hammond and their children, Margaret, Albert and Kilby of Birmingham, AL. Mr. Hammond is also survived by his stepchildren, Sydney Sarah Vinnedge of Pacific Palisades, CA, John Elizabeth Vinnedge of Los Angeles, CA, William Mary Lou Vinnedge of Langhorn PA, Fanny Effler of Toledo, OH, Teddi Joe Marsh of Canton, NY and their many children and grandchildren. He also leaves his good friend, Jean Pritchard. He will be remembered as a kind, gentle man with a continually optimistic outlook and will be missed by all. A memorial service will be held at 10:30am on Saturday, October 11, 2008 at the Sunset House, 4020 Indian Rd. Toledo, Ohio.
