George L. Brindley, age 93, of South Toledo, passed away on Thursday, July 31, 2008, at the University of Toledo Medical Center. George was born on September 26, 1914, to Jacob L. and Carrie Pickens Brindley. He was raised in East Toledo and graduated from Waite High School in 1932. George lost both of his parents in his teenage years. In 1948, at a friends wedding reception, he met Adele F. Schmidt, and they were married on April 30, 1949. Adele passed away January 4, 2003, at the age of 85. George was hired by Sun Oil Company as a refinery timekeeper on February 24, 1941. One month later, on March 27, 1941, an explosion occurred that severely burned him, causing third degree burns on his face, hands and ears three of the five injured men died due to burns. He spent 9 months in Toledo Hospital, as well as enduring additional skin grafting surgeries in Detroit, MI, Oakland, CA and New York City Hospitals. George worked 24 years for Sun Oil, six in the refinery, and 18 years as a dispatcher in their L.P.G. Department Liquid Petroleum Gas, retiring from the company on May 1, 1965. He continued his employment with several local companies, Spangler Candy Company, Pella Windows and Testmaster. Always kind, caring, generous, compassionate, honest person, and with a remarkable memory, George lived his long life by the Golden Rule. He enjoyed watching sports on television, especially the Detroit Tigers. Maintaining his home and flower gardens gave him much pleasure; he was also an avid antique collector for over 60 years. George was a current member of Park Congregational Church; prior to Park, he was a long time member of Zion United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, William, and sister, Luella Martin. Surviving are his loving daughter, Dianne A. Brindley, and son, Brian J. Brindley; grandchildren, Jennifer Derrik Craun, of Florida; Kimberly and Dan of Toledo. There will be no visitation and funeral services will be private. Interment will take place at Toledo Memorial Park. The family suggest memorial contributions be made to the Toledo Humane Society, 1920 Indianwood Circle, Maumee, OH 43537.
