George “Coach” S. Berry of Toledo, departed on June 2, 2023 at his home with his family by his side. He was born to George and Marie Berry (Webb) on July 16, 1942. The most important things to our dad were faith, his family and sports.
Dad attended St. Francis De Sales grade school. It was at St. Francis that his love of sports began and with his brother’s encouragement, grew. He graduated in 1960 from Scott High School where he was a member of the state final four basketball team. As a freshman at Tri-State University, he was a starter on the varsity team. After Tri-State he continued to play basketball and began his long coaching career. He was head coach for numerous championship Federated AAU teams, Head coach for 7th and 8th grade boys basketball at Regina Coeli, head freshman coach at St Francis De Sales High School and assistant varsity coach at Bedford High School. Dad loved Notre Dame football, Boston Celtics and Toledo Rockets basketball and both the Detroit Tigers and Lions.
After 37 years he retired from the fire department at Jeep in 2000 where he had made many dear life-long friends. George is survived by daughters Amy Crowe and Karen (Jeff) Berry sons; Steven Berry, Chris (Mandy) Berry and Jeremy Berry; grandchildren Nick, Max, Graycen and Helena; great-grandchildren Damion, Charlotte, Eloise, Adelyn and Cecilia as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Frank; grandson Aaron; and niece, Tricia. We wish to thank Nikieta, Audie, Renee and Theresa for their wonderful care of our dad.
