George Arthur Smith, known affectionately as “Big Man” and “Pawpaw,” passed away peacefully at his home in Genoa, Ohio, on July 29, 2025, at the age of 77.
Born on August 5, 1947, in Toledo, Ohio, at St. Vincent’s Hospital, George was a proud and hardworking man whose love for life, family, and God shined through in all he did. He left school at the age of 16 to begin his journey in the workforce, a path that led to a remarkable 54-year career as a dedicated hazmat truck driver for Univar Inc.
George shared 23 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Vicky Smith. Together, they built a life full of laughter, love, and cherished memories.
A lifelong car enthusiast, George found great fulfillment in restoring classic vehicles — and was working on a 1955 Chevy before his passing. He also had a deep love for golf — both playing and watching — and was once the proud manager of the High-Tech Clog Dancers in 1994. Music played a special role in his life; he was gifted with the ability to play guitar and sing, especially favoring the sounds of country music. His appreciation for cars lead him to travel to car shows in Louisville, KY and Bowling Green, KY with Vicky, his brother Roy, and Ann.
Above all else, George loved his family and held an unwavering faith in God. He is survived by his wife Vicky; his brother Roy Smith (Ann); his children Junior and Terri; his stepdaughter Tina and stepson Dustin; along with several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom knew the warmth and wisdom of their “Pawpaw.”
He was preceded in death by his mother Virginia, father GC, his granny and pawpaw, brother Lloyd and son Eric.
George’s legacy of love, hard work, music, and faith will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
