Gayle Joyce Austin

In the early morning hours of Saturday, July 25, 2026, Gayle Joyce Austin passed away peacefully in her sleep of natural causes. She was 91 years old and was resting under hospice care on the campus of Flower Hospital in Sylvania, Ohio.

Born during the depression in Oak Park, IL, as the second of four daughters, Gayle grew up immersed in music, craft, and a strong Midwestern work ethic. These defining traits remained with her throughout her life, and they live on today in her three sisters, her children, and her grandchildren.

Gayle's life was marked by both profound resilience and deep devotion. Widowed at just 24 years old in small town Owosso, MI, she was left to single-handedly raise four rambunctious boys. She packed them up and moved to Ann Arbor, MI, working as a candy striper at a local hospital. While attending a university social, she met her second husband, Doug. Together, they built a blended family as Doug, a widower himself, navigated raising his child while facing immense personal challenges that ultimately cost him his eyesight.

Because of Doug's blindness, Gayle continued to shoulder the daily running of the household and raising of her children, ensuring they learned all the essential and practical life skills and crafts needed to thrive. Yet, she always kept room for joy, laughter, and a bit of friendly competition-she absolutely loved playing Scrabble and occasionally hosted family ping-pong games on the kitchen island.

Gayle was truly an artist of everyday craft-an accomplished seamstress, knitter, and cook who expressed her creativity through sewing banners for the church, knitting sweaters for her kids, and creating beautiful heirloom quilts for all. She filled her home with music and loved playing the piano. Deeply involved in her community, she proudly served as president of her garden club, was a dedicated member of the herb group and the University Women's Club and volunteered in many other organizations. She was also a longtime church member and patron. In a beautiful tribute that combined her faith and love of music, she generously funded the church carillon and organ restoration.

Gayle loved being an active part of her children's and grandchildren's lives. She placed a high value on their education and upbringing. She rarely missed a milestone, traveling and showing up with immense pride to attend their graduations, music concerts, and sporting events. Later in life, when she couldn't be there in person, she loved talking to her grandchildren on the phone, keeping up with every detail of their lives. She treasured and read and then reread the letters they sent her. She fervently encouraged and supported her children and grandchildren to try new things and loved creating alongside them too, whether teaching hands-on crafts or passing down family history in the kitchen while showing the secrets of her own mother's special coffee cake. If you took the time to be with Gayle, you were rewarded with lifetime memories.

Independent and strong-willed to the very end, Gayle leaves behind an unforgettable legacy of strength, creativity, and fierce love. She will be deeply missed.

Gayle was preceded in death by her parents, Kent and Catherine Greene of Owosso, MI; her first husband, Jack Bernard of Owosso, MI, who passed away in 1961; her second husband, Douglas Austin of Ottawa Hills, OH, who passed away in 2005; and her grandson, Bryan Bernard.

She is lovingly remembered by her children and their spouses: Michael, Jeffery (Karen), Stephen (Peggy), Craig (Marla) Bernard; Carole Lynn (Tim) Stradtman and David (Mariann) Austin. She also leaves behind 15 grandchildren: Taylor, Lyndsey, Zoe, Violet, Piper, William, Katie, Gillian, Ashley, Hillary, Lily, Chandler, Eleanor, Isabelle, and Theodore; 7 great-grandchildren; and her three loving sisters: Geraldine Ford, Gwendolyn Mitchell, and Georgean Keyes. In addition to her immediate family, Gayle is survived by many nieces and nephews, as well as countless friends who became family throughout her remarkable life.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Epworth United Methodist Church, 4855 W. Central Ave, Ottawa Hills, OH 43615. A reception will immediately follow the service, where family and friends are invited to gather, share memories, and celebrate Gayle's beautiful life.
