Gay Jean Blossom

December 2, 1935 — September 1, 2015

Gay Jean (Frye) Blossom, age 79, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on September 1, 2015, at Ebeid Hospice from complications due to a stroke. She was born December 2, 1935, in Adrian, Michigan, to parents Ernest and Helen Hull Frye. She lost her father at an early age and was raised by her loving mother. She graduated from Scott High School, Class of 1953, and was voted All-Scott Girl her senior year. She attended Miami University, and graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Toledo in 1957 with a Bachelors degree in Education. She was an active member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. She married G. Barton Blossom on August 24, 1957, and taught elementary school in Kansas City from 1957 – 1961 while Bart attended medical school. After returning to Toledo, she taught briefly with Washington Local Schools before starting her family and becoming a homemaker. She volunteered as a Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout den mother, and was a room mother and Mini-Museum art program presenter at Stranahan Elementary School in Sylvania. After raising her children, she returned to the classroom, and taught 3rd grade at Hillview Elementary in Sylvania from 1986 until her retirement in 2004. She was active with tennis at Sylvania Country Club for many years, and took up golf later in life when her knees dictated that she retire from tennis. She was a longtime member of Epworth United Methodist Church, and was involved in Bible Study and many other church activities. Throughout the years she served as President of the Parkview Hospital Auxilliary, President of the Compass Club of Toledo, Treasurer of the Corey Woods Garden Club and Chairman of the Cotillion Dance Club. She was also involved in the Circle of Grandparents organization in Worthington, Ohio, schools, where several of her grandchildren attend. She was fortunate to have traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and world with family and friends, and on many boat trips on Lake Erie with her dogs. She was very proud of her grandchildren, and made regular trips to Columbus to spend time with them. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend, and will be greatly missed. Hers was a life well-lived. She was preceded in death by her parents. Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband, Dr. G.B. Blossom, children Geoffrey (Justine) Blossom, Laurie (Allen) Wirt, and Julie (Scott) Harvey, all of the Columbus area, and grandchildren Jordan, Matthew and Nathan Blossom; Allison and Emily Wirt; and Katie and Drew Harvey. Friends may call at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave., Toledo, OH 43623, from 11:30 – 3:30pm on Saturday, Sept. 5. A memorial service will be held at Epworth United Methodist Church, 4855 W.
