Gary L. Thompson

Gary L. Thompson died peacefully on October 2, 2023, at the age of 72. He was born to his parents, Clarence and Goldie (O’Neal) Thompson on January 26, 1951, in Toledo, Ohio. Gary grew up in the Toledo area and attended Lourdes University for his undergraduate degree. He went on to receive his Masters of Education and Technology from the University of Toledo.

Hard work and dedication to the UAW for over 53 years, Gary was a proud union member. He retired as a trainer with General Motors and then the Director of Toledo Technology Academy. Gary earned many accolades over the years for his leadership and team building skills, which he used to assist many organizations in helping them grow in a positive manner. Gary was extremely goal oriented when it came to his professional career.

Gary had many hobbies and pastimes, some of which were target shooting, music of all kinds (especially Jimmy Buffet), and being outside enjoying the pool. He was a veracious reader his entire life. A big fan of Stephen King, and John Grisham novels early on. Gary certainly had a knack for creating and building relationships, which made him loved by all.

Gary is survived by his loving wife, Lori Thompson; children, Christopher (Tara) Thompson, Tiffany Secord, Nichole (Chad) Oman, Katie (Johnny) Greene, Matthew (Amy) Oler; 11 grandchildren; brothers Mike (Sandy) Mitchell, Donnie (Tammy) Mitchell; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Goldie O’Neal, father, Clarence Thompson; brother, James Rowe.

A visitation will be held at the Walker Funeral Home (5155 W. Sylvania Ave.) on Friday, October 6, 2023, from 4 pm – 7 pm. Funeral will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at the funeral home beginning at 11 am with the Celebration of Life to follow at the UAW Hall-Local 14(5411 Jackman Rd, Toledo).
