Gary R. Layman

Gary R. Layman, 78, of Oak Harbor passed away Monday, July 5, 2021 at Firelands Regional Medical Center, Sandusky, OH. He was born on December 27, 1942 in Port Clinton, OH to George and Elizabeth (Sehlmeyer) Layman. Gary graduated from Salem-Oak Harbor High School in 1960. On February 7, 1964 at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Oak Harbor he married Karen F. Velliquette, and she survives. Gary worked for Whirlpool Corporation in Clyde, OH for 40 years before retiring. After retirement Gary worked several years cutting grass for Turtle Creek Marina and he enjoyed snow-birding in Florida. He was a lifelong member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Oak Harbor including longtime choir member, Advisor of Luther League (youth group), Men in Mission group, and a 66-year member of the Dart Ball Team. Gary was a charter member of the Carroll Township Volunteer Fire & E.M.S., an avid fan of the Oak Harbor Rockets, The Ohio State Buckeyes, and the Cleveland Indians & Browns. Gary was also an avid camper, bowler and golfer, who had just recently made his first hole-in-one on June 14, 2021. Gary and Karen’s travels allowed them to visit all 50 states. In addition to his loving wife of 57 years, Karen, Gary is survived by his children, Eric (Keri Bates) Layman and Christine (Jim) Blacka, grandkids, Carolanne Layman, Erica (Jackson) Gallagher, Conner Blacka, Shane Blacka, and Bryan Blacka, great grandson, Jensen Gallagher, brother, Paul (Pam) Layman, sister, Susan Atkinson, and many nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Susan’s companion, Jack Rose. Visitation for Gary will be Friday, July 9, 2021 from 4-8 p.m. at the Robinson-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, 165 E. Water St., Oak Harbor. A Celebration of Life will be conducted 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 10, 2021 at St. John Ev. Lutheran Church, 122 W. Ottawa St., Oak Harbor.
