Gary T. Ankenbrandt

February 16, 1963 — May 30, 2018

Gary T. Ankenbrandt, age 55, passed away on May 30, 2018 in the comfort of his home. Gary was born to Joseph T. “Tommy” and Dorothy (Scott) Ankenbrandt on February 16, 1963 in Toledo, Ohio and was a lifetime resident of Maumee. A 1982 graduate of Maumee High School and Penta Career Center, Gary began his career in construction with the City of Maumee in 1984 as a laborer, and later a heavy equipment operator, contributing each day to the maintenance of his beloved hometown. This is where he acquired the satirical nickname “Dr. Scary” by his co-workers and friends, which always got a good laugh, as he was a very friendly and caring person, immediately getting along with everyone he met. Gary retired on disability in 1998, beginning a second career in leisure. Gary married his high school sweetheart in 1982, raising two awesome kids: Jamie and Joel. Gary shared his love of the great outdoors with his children, whether it be exploring the woods of Northern Michigan, camping, canoeing, riding four-wheelers, or taking the “scenic route” by the Maumee River and Sidecut Park. Gary was a member of the North American Hunters Club and Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, though his true passion was simply admiring and enjoying nature. He was a proud supporter of Military Veterans, often toting memorabilia from the Korean War, of which his father was a veteran. Gary also enjoyed woodworking, watching westerns and crime dramas on television, collecting antiques and vintage goods, and sharing his own stories of his outdoor adventures and latest medical triumphs. Gary is survived by his children, Jamie (Anthony) Tscherne and Joel (Pam) Ankenbrandt; grandchildren, Allie, Norah, and Paul Ankenbrandt and Ryan Tscherne; mother, Dorothy; brothers, Mark (Cheryl) and John (Terry); and many uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Gary was preceded in death by his father, Joseph; and brother, Paul. A private gathering for immediate family took place Saturday, June 2, 2018. A Celebration of Life is being planned for Saturday, June 16th, 2018. Donations can be made in Gary’s name to Disabled American Veterans Charitable Service Trust, or directly to his family. Arrangements by Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, Maumee. Online condolences can be shared at www.walkerfuneralhomes.com.
