Garland Blankenship, 82, of Port Clinton, OH, passed away Thursday, April 16, 2009 at Stein Hospice of Sandusky, OH. He was born in Pike County, Kentucky on December 14, 1926 to James and Polly Wolford Blankenship. On May, 28, 1946, in Pikeville, KY he married Lucy Whitt and she preceded him in death on August 25, 2005. Garland was a mold press operator at Standard Products for 38 years retiring in 1989. Garland served in the U.S. Army from 1951-53, in Panama as a military police officer during the Korean War from 1952-53 and served in the reserves until 1959. He was a handyman and enjoyed tinkering with cars and loved the outdoors. He enjoyed watching television especially western films. He loved being Papo to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include: daughter: Edna Kenneth VanHoose of Port Clinton; son: Danny Ray Blankenship of Port Clinton; grandchildren: Michael R. Dawn VanHoose, Michelle R. Rick Ward, Danny Ray Brittney Blankenship II, all of Port Clinton; great-grandchildren: Seth, Michaella, Mileena, Hailey, Andrew; brother: Arnold Brook Blankenship of Piney Flats, TN. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife: Lucy and 8 sisters: Cora, Leanie, Annie, Pearl, Myrtle, Edith, Mae, Alta. Visitation will be 6-8 PM on Monday, April 20, 2009 in the Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home and Crematory, Port Clinton, OH. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, April 21, 2009 in the funeral home, where additional visitation will be held from 12-2 PM prior to the service. Interment will follow in Riverview Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions in memory of Garland be directed to Stein Hospice of Sandusky, OH or St. Judes Childrens Hospital.
