Frank Madachy

Frank Madachy, 85, of Toledo, left for his new Heavenly home on Monday, June 7, 2021. Frank was with his wife of 61 years Eleanor (Hart), daughter Mary St. John, and son-in-law Kevin St. John. Frank was born August 21, 1935, in Fadd, Hungary to Jozsef and Julianna (Laszlo) Madacsi. He was educated to the third grade in Hungary and survived on his own from the age of 13. He became a policeman in Hungary at 15, while conducting spy work for the United States government against the communist regime. Dad was arrested and imprisoned for life for spying. After 3 years, someone opened the prison doors on October 28, when he immediately joined the fight in the 1956 Revolution until December. Frank was able to escape Hungary in December, 1956, to Austria, then came to the United States in February 1957, sailing on a navy destroyer into New York. He stayed in New Jersey for a week, and then chose Toledo, Ohio to be his new home. Frank met his wife Eleanor in Toledo in September, 1957 and were married August 1, 1959. Eleanor taught Frank English using "Spot, Tim, and Puff" books, which he pronounced "Spot, team, and Poof". She also used an English/Hungarian dictionary, beginning with the alphabet, and went on from there. Frank and Eleanor started their own business, F.M. Maintenance and Repair Co., Inc., in 1961 with their last $5, winning a bid over lunch to fix garbage trucks. Mom and Dad built their business up over time, often working days on end to get jobs done. F.M. Maintenance was a very successful machine and fabricating shop, where no job was too big or too small. They worked together for 43 years, retiring December 31, 2004. Frank loved to take vacations in Florida, going shark fishing and scuba diving. He even constructed a vehicle out of an old Army dukw that he could drive on land or on water. Frank visited family and friends in Hungary on 9 occasions. His favorite meal was a big bowl of chicken paprikas. Surviving Frank are his wife of 61 years, Eleanor (Hart) Madachy, daughters Eleanor (Don) Avenelle, and Mary Ann (Kevin) St. John of Toledo; and Julia Chio of Genoa; Lauri Barhite, 36-year companion of son Frank Joseph Madachy, granddaughter Amanda (Jamie) Dull of Chicago; special cousins in Hungary, Steve (Eva) Hajdu and their son Gabor, Steve (Agnes) Horvath, special nephew Peter (Mary) Szaszin, and many other relatives and friends in Hungary, Switzerland, and Canada. Frank was preceded in death by sons Leslie Joseph Madachy (1989), and Frank Joseph Madachy (2018). Visitation for Frank will be Friday, June 11, 2021 at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Avenue, Toledo, from 4-7 pm. Chicken paprikas will be available for all to enjoy. Services at 12 noon will be held on Saturday, June 12, with a one-hour visitation beginning at 11 am. Interment to follow at Toledo Memorial Park. If you wish to attend interment, please bring a chair, as covid restrictions prohibit TMP from furnishing seating.
